Low back pain

Physio in Exeter, Truro and across Devon & Cornwall to beat persistent low back pain

If you are struggling with low back pain, you are not alone. This is the most common musculoskeletal condition in the UK, impacting many of us at some point in our lives.

The good news is that 95% of the timepain is not due to a serious cause and is not dangerous. Equally that doesn’t mean that pain can’t be severe and cause significant suffering.

Continued low back pain often goes hand-in-hand with multiple visits to physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors for a whole host of treatments. Long term medication, scans and x-rays are all deployed in a vain attempt to overcome it or reduce the suffering. Despite this, many people find that the back pain returns, limiting everyday activities.

We provide low back pain physio with a difference, designed to break this cycle. By working with you to pinpoint the factors that are contributing to your pain, we can help you to change these to deliver a rapid and sustained improvement.

Low back pain due to a serious underlying medical condition is very uncommon. However, should this prove to be the case, we will identify this quickly and refer you to the appropriate medical expert.

The lowdown on low back pain

For those with chronic back pain (i.e. pain that has lasted for more than three months), you may be coping with niggling episodes of pain or it may be proving disabling. If this is having a significant effect on your life, it can result in a chain of interventions, including repeated physio / osteopath / chiropractorappointments, medication, X-rays and MRI scans and, ultimately, referral to a spinal unit.

Much of the time, though, these interventions prove ineffective. Spinal surgeons actually only operate on a very small proportion of the people referred to them. Most patients are given a diagnosis and are then returned to the care of their GP.

The problem with this is that it often leaves you without a clear route to recovery, feeling that you are stuck with the pain.

A diagnosis of a herniated disc, nerve root compression, degenerative disc disease and other disorders doesn’t necessarily explain your pain – there are many people with these conditions who have never suffered any discomfort. We can also experience back pain with no apparent cause.

Tackling the barriers to your recovery

The truth is, low back pain is almost always due to how we use our body, our lifestyle and how we think.

We provide low back pain treatment that helps you to change this – without manipulation, without core stability, without corsets and without you needing to protect your back or be fearful about causing damage.

If you have been suffering from troublesome back pain for a long time, the initial trigger for this is generally no longer important. What makes the difference are the factors impacting your recovery, such as your attitudes, beliefs, fears, movements and habitsand how these influence your behaviour.

We work with you to identify the areas that have been blocking you from overcoming your pain, providing a structured plan tailored to your unique circumstances. We show you what to do and how to do it and support you through the journey. This gives you the tools you need to take control and manage your pain.

By making changes for long-lasting results, you can get back to doing the things you love – even if you’ve had low back pain for years and tried lots of treatments.
