Frequently asked questions
At your first session, we will take the time to listen to your issues to fully understand your situation and be clear how to manage it. We ask questions you may not expect to be asked. This is because we need to know about all aspects that we know can contribute to your problem. This will allow us to quickly home in on your problems, develop ways of reducing your pain and improving your function right away. We’ll also develop and practice a plan for you to further improve in your own time. We aim for you to get yourself better and stay better with our support and guidance.
Our assessment will tell us what you need to do to improve at home. Often, we are unaware of the aspects that are causing our problem. It could be training yourself to react differently to a set of circumstances or to make you fitter to cope with demands or even to ease off and rest. It could be re-learning lost or new skills.
It may focus on the physical aspects – mobility, strength, endurance or the lifestyle – sleep, diet, stress management, or the cognitive – beliefs, thoughts, habits. It could be and often is a combination of all of these aspects. When put into practice it is a powerful way of improving and staying well.
We aim to help you restore normality and will show you how to do it.
It’s not essential to undress and we respect your preferences at all times. We often need to see the relevant body part when we do an assessment, but we will be discreet. For a shoulder or neck problem, ladies may want to wear a vest top. For lower limb and back problems, shorts are appropriate. It’s important you’re comfortable and that you let us know how you feel.
We aim to give you the minimum number of treatments to get the maximum benefit. We’ll be able to give you a better idea after your assessment as it depends on a number of factors. We will always be straight with you about how much treatment you need.
From experience the patients that need the least amount of treatments are the ones who implement our agreed plan the most effectively. That way you won’t need us! Patients who rely on us doing the work, tend to be less successful. That is not our favoured outcome.
A standard appointment will always last at least 30 minutes. This is usually enough if you have a recent pain issue. If you’ve had your problem for longer than three months, or it is recurrent, this needs up to an hour to accurately understand your problem and make a treatment plan.
If you are unsure about how long you need, it is best to call us for a chat. That way yo get the best appointment to ensure the quickest recovery.
