My approach

A different approach to physio in Cornwall

Successful physiotherapy requires routine check-ups, with ongoing visits for adjustments, alignments and other treatments, right?

Wrong… Here at Transform Health in Cornwall, it works differently. It’s nothing personal, but I don’t want to see you on a regular basis!

I believe that traditional physio, with its emphasis on your symptoms in isolation to everything else, encourages a dependency on therapists, which costing a lot of money and leading to a decline in our quality of life over time.

I practise Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT), based on up-to-date scientific research on what causes our pain. That way we can quickly change the factors causing the problem. The evidence shows the holistic approach of CFT is significantly more effective than traditional care.

This is modern physiotherapy, targeting the particular problems of each individual to result in:

  • Faster pain reduction
  • Return to normal life more quickly
  • Less treatment
  • Lower costs
  • Longer-lasting outcomes

What can you expect from a physio session with me?

I provide physio across Cornwall or via online consultations for those elsewhere in the South West or beyond. During your session, I make an assessment on the cause(s) of your pain and provide you with a detailed treatment plan. Unlike traditional physio, this involves absolutely no painful prodding or manipulation.

Instead, I take the time to build a detailed picture of your situation by:

  1. Understanding your story

We take the time to talk about the specifics of your pain. During this process we learn what’s causing your problem and how to change it.

Once we have determined whether your pain has been caused by injury, illness or something else, I then look at any factors that may be contributing to this or preventing your recovery. Barriers to recovery can include recent stressful events and situations, work problems, family issues, patterns of physical movement, information from medical consultations and mental state.

  1. Making sense of your pain

Pain is the result of our nervous system reacting to a perceived threat (such as injury or illness). Our body can then alter its ways of moving to protect against this. Sometimes, this can actually prolong the problem – and the longer you are in pain, the worse this can become.

Understanding in simple terms what is feeding into your pain is the first step to creating a plan to manage this and head towards recovery.

  1. Observing how you move and hold your body

When we are in pain, we often adopt different patterns of movement to compensate for the ‘weak’ area or to protect this. There can also be a fear that we are going to cause harm if we move in a certain way.

I assess your posture and movements and provide guidance on simple changes to make, giving you the confidence you need to listen to your body and how to be more aware of this in your everyday life. We also practice alternative ways of doing things and experience the benefit.

  1. Creating a plan

By the end of our session, I will have identified the root causes of your pain and any reasons this is being maintained, or potential barriers to recovery. We will also discuss how our thought patterns are linked to our physical responses, with practical tips for overcoming this.

I then create a structured plan to help you progress back towards your normal life in the shortest possible time.

  1. Working in partnership with you

Unlike traditional physiotherapy, this is not a passive process. Following up-to-date scientific evidence, I work with you to give you the tools you need to move forwards with your recovery and become your own physio.

There are no quick fixes, although changes can result in rapid improvement in both pain symptoms and abilities.

My aim is to help you deal with your pain in a proactive and comprehensive way, so that you can get back to living a full and active life as soon as possible.

I follow the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s recommendations on face-to-face and virtual assessments.
